Drawing Breath
Ill defined in the half-light,
under the blue shadow of London planes,
desiccated leaves whisper in a soft gossiping.
Lamplight wavers up the pathway; an energetic
cycIist passing with a whir of wheels
inspires with each deep breath
cold damp air from the autumn evening.
Twilight. The crescent of the moon brightens.
Final chirping of small birds pricks the air,
passes from tree to tree like a random
punctuation of exclamation marks.
