i'll wait till 3pm then wrap it myself

It's 11pm
I'm surrounded
by balloons
the silence
of your sleeping child
the present you bought
sits unwrapped

I've iced a yellow cake
sprinkled an orange
starburst too tired
for complexities
she won't notice
more interested in
wrapping paper & bows

pastries have been
rolled folded
rolled & filled
a bottle of lindauer
waits in the fridge
my parents are coming
a friend may call

I wonder
if you'll turn up

I'm thinking
up excuses for you
if you don't
